I hoped that this episode would largely redeem the first half of season five. They are the frame in which all the rest happens. This episode alternates between the frenzied chaos of the battlefield and slow flashbacks and fantasy sequences which might as well be shot through misty filters to emphasise how little they resemble any kind of reality. One of the biggest offensives to the realistic depiction that has, with very few exceptions, been Vikings' bread-and-butter are also its most important moments: the deaths of important characters and the reaction of their loved ones to those deaths. Four and a half seasons of watching Vikings on the battlefield has taught us better than that.

They sing together, friends and enemies, the brothers who will soon kill each other. Queen Lagertha tells her new lover, Heahmund, that this could be the last time they see each other. The war drum sounds. Hvitserk races into battle. He has told his brother, Ivar, that he has no regrets. Though he does wish he had children. But he cannot go through with it.

It didn't work. I hated all the flashbacks. The way the action kept cutting back to these memories characters have before the battle. I hated how artsy the show tried to make the battle, once again ditching any semblance of realism in favor of darma. I didn't mind the shots where suddenly it was just one or two characters alone on the battlefield. These moments added a haunting quality to the violence and chaos.
